Concept
Investor, commitment, and fund
A fund is the vehicle. An investor is the LP. A commitment is what they have agreed to that fund.
A fund is the vehicle the firm raises and invests. Harbor Lane Fund I is a fund. Funds are managed in Finance.
An investor is the limited partner, or the organisation that will become one. Investors are managed in Investor Relations. An investor is not a portfolio company and not a deal target.
A commitment is the amount an investor has agreed to a fund. It belongs to that investor and that fund. A commitment is not a deal, and it is not a capital call. Calls and notices come later, against the commitment.
The same organisation can be an investor in the fund and, separately, a company the fund might back. Those are two records, used for two jobs.
